Preparing to open bridge for boat traffic Opening the bridge
Opening the bridge is a lot more involved than most people think. The bridge tenders must first identify the boat traffic approaching the bridge from both directions, to make sure that they can clear the bridge during this opening. It may be necessary to delay the opening for a few minutes or open it a few minutes early to commercial traffic like a loaded barge. Next they check with the local Fire Departments and Rescue Squads on both sides to make sure that neither one are in route to an fire, accident or other type emergency. When all is clear with emergency agencies, the bridge tenders start the warning flashers for roadway traffic, then began closing the highway gates on both sides of the bridge. After the gates have closed and all highway traffic has stopped, they can begin the process of actually opening the bridge for waterway traffic.
